The wet lands and open fields surrounding the valley make up a diverse habitat for many species of birds. Besides this, lots of birds are found throughout the country of diverse species because of the differences in vegetation and altitude of the places. Nepal is the home of some endangered birds like Impeyan Pheasant, which is also Nepal’s national bird, and Spiny Babbler, which is found only in Nepal. This bird watching tour program makes you an explorer, roaming in the famous wet lands and National parks of Nepal  for sights of these beautiful birds with a terrific opportunity to photograph them. 

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be welcomed by our Lumle representative and transferred to the Hotel. At the hotel, you will be briefed about the program by the Lumle representative.

Day 2Bird Watching in Shivapuri National Park

Located on the northern fringe of Kathmandu and named after Shivapuri Peak, the national park is a major bird watching hub not just in Nepal but also in the Indian Subcontinent. Its location between the subtropical and temperate climate allows it to be adobe of more than 117 species that includes about 9 endangered species. Along with the birds, it also hosts about 100 species of butterflies, some of which are rare and endangered.

Day 3Kathmandu sightseeing

You will have the entire morning to yourself to rejuvenate.

After breakfast, you will start the cultural exploration of Nepal from Kathmandu, a mystical mix of religion, culture and historical monuments.

You will explore Kathmandu Durbar Square where most of the temples and palaces date back to the 17th and 18th century. Your time in Kathmandu also includes a visit to Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist Stupa in Nepal. You can walk around the Stupa spinning the prayer wheels engraved with chants and offer a traditional butter lamp to Lord Buddha. Witnessing the Tibetan devotees offering their prayers is a sight to behold.

Nearby is the Pashupatinath, one of the major pilgrimage destinations for Hindus in the world. Dedicated to Shiva, the Hindu God of Destruction, the temple also includes an open cremation site and is an adobe for colourful Sadhus (Hindu Saints).

Throughout the trip, you will be accompanied by a driver and an English-speaking guide who will explain the historical and cultural significance of each spot.

Day 4Birdwatching in Phulchowki

Phulchowki is situated about 15 km southeast of Kathmandu. This hill is 2759m high and is a great spot for hiking. Rhododendron of different varieties and colours from pure white to dark red can be found here and makes it a spectacular sight. This is also the most popular bird watching spot in the valley. 265 species of birds have been recorded here to date. The birds seen here include Flycatchers, Yuhinas, Sunbirds, Flower peckers, Rose-finches, Babblers, Warblers, Tits, Thrushes, Minivets, Woodpeckers, Eagles and many migrating birds. Godavari, at the foot of the Phulchowki hill where Royal Botanical Garden is situated, is a habitat for over 100 species of birds including lesser Racket tailed Drongo, Tibetan Siskin and the Spotted Forktail.

Day 5Flight to Biratnagar. Drive to Koshi Tappu

Koshi Tappu is easily accessible from Biratnagar after an hour and a half drive. Biratnagar is well connected by road (519 km) and via several flights with Kathmandu.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve lies on the flood plains of the Sapta Koshi in Saptari and Sunsari districts of Eastern Nepal. The Reserve covers 175 sq.km and was established in 1976. The vegetation is mainly tall Khar-pater grassland with a few patches of Khairsissoo, scrub forest and deciduous mixed riverine forest. The Reserve offers important habitat for a variety of wildlife. The last surviving population (about 100 remaining) of Wild Buffaloes are found here. Other mammals that can be found here are Hog Deer, Wild Boar, Spotted Deer and Blue Bull. A total of 423 species of birds have been recorded here, including 20 species of ducks, 2 species of Ibises, many Storks, Egrets, Herons and the endangered Swamp Partridges and Bengal Floricans. 183 species of different birds are recorded daily. Visitors can see a minimum of 100 species of birds in a day.

Day 6Bird Watching in Koshi Tappu

You will embark on a full day of bird exploring activities on foot and on boats.

Koshi Tappu is one of Asia’s finest wetlands and is a fabulous bird watching destination. Almost all of Nepal’s long list of Wildfowl, Waders, Storks, Ibises, Herons, Egrets, Tems and Gulls can be found here plus a great variety of land-birds that include specialities such as Swamp Francolin, Red-necked Falcon and Straited Marsh Warbler.

Day 7Drive Koshi Tappu-Royal Chitwan National Park

Today you will drive to Chitwan for 9-10 hrs through the beautiful landscapes. You will get ample chances to see White-Rumped Needletail Swifts and Ibisbills en-route. Upon arrival in Jungle Lodge, you will be welcomed by the Naturalist and you will be provided information of the tour. Chitwan National Park is the most famous national park in Nepal which inhabits 450 species of birds and many species of animals including 4 species of Deer, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Wild Boar and many more. This park is well known for the endangered One horned Rhinoceros and it is a shelter for the majestic Royal Bengal Tigers. If you are extremely lucky, you might get a glimpse of the Tigers. Besides this, Chitwan also supports a great variety of flora and fauna.

Day 8Chitwan Bird Watching and Activities

The whole day is packed with adventures consisting of a canoe ride, village visit and exploration of the jungle on foot and jeep for bird viewing. In the evening you will enjoy a cultural dance performed by local villagers.

Day 9Chitwan

We start where we left off the previous day and begin a full day of jungle activities. This includes jungle walk, canoe ride, bird watching, nature walk etc.

Day 10Chitwan – Pokhara

We will travel from Chitwan to Pokhara via an air conditioned tourist coach. The journey will take around 7 to 8 hours depending on the traffic. On arrival, you will be picked up from the tourist coach station by a Lumle representative and transferred to the hotel. On arrival, you’ll check into the hotel and you will be given a brief for the Pokhara activities. The evening then is for rest and relaxation.

Day 11Pokhara Sightseeing

On day 11, you will explore the serene city of Pokhara by visiting some of its famous lakes, temples like Gupteshwor Mahadev and David’s Fall. You’re accompanied by a driver and an English-speaking guide who will explain the historical and cultural importance of each spot.

Day 12Pokhara – Kathmandu

We now begin our drive to Kathmandu via an air conditioned tourist coach. This drive along the banks of Trishuli River will let you enjoy amazing landscapes, glimpses of the authentic countryside of Nepal and pristine towns. The journey will take around 7 to 8 hours depending on the traffic. On arrival, you will be picked up from the tourist coach station by a Lumle representative and transferred to the hotel.

Day 13Final Departure

Your 14 days of adventure in Nepal are over and it is time for you to recall your memories of your bird watching tour during your journey back home.
